Cafe Con Leche Espresso Bar

Cafe Con Leche Espresso Bar

The Junction Triangle sure needed a place like this, and I'm happy to see this stretch of Dupont begin to liven up. In the two years that I've been living in this area, good coffee and a cozy cafe like this one were basically non-existent.

Cafe Con Leche is owned by a sweet and adorable couple who are super-friendly and very welcoming. I will always remember the one evening when Carlos (one of the owners) stopped traffic in the midst of Snowmageddon, so that my friend and I could cross the street to get lattes.

Their specialty is the Nutella latte -- it's a must try! Aside from coffee and lattes, the place offers scrumptious pastries including their famous Nutella donut. (They are very big on their Nutella love!) The shop offers free WiFi, so it's also a great place to get some work done.

I will miss being able to visit this shop as often when I move out of the neighbourhood. It's worth the bus ride to check out though, so I will be sure to pay my visits.

Patios With the Best Beer Selection

Patios With the Best Beer Selection:

Toronto relishes its patio season—outdoor seating is crammed with crowds at the first sign of spring and they don’t let up until bar owners pack away the patio furniture. However, for the city’s most discerning beer-swilling palates, not all patios are created equal.

Here are ten of the top patios for Toronto beer lovers (with a few bonus picks thrown in!):

Allen’s

One of the Toronto patio scene’s crown jewels, Allen’s backyard oasis, complete with a huge weeping willow tree, is always packed, which should come as no surprise given the pub’s stellar selection of suds.

Bar Volo

A bar for the beer connoisseur, Bar Volo’s umbrella-shaded side patio fills up quickly and stays packed throughout most summer evenings. With a rotating selection of taps and casks, nobody’s in a rush to move on.

Beer Bistro

Though the patio may be narrow, the beer list is not. An excellent and oft-changing selection of draught and bottled beer makes this a financial district favourite.

Bier Markt

Since opening its King Street West location a few years ago, this patio is perennially packed—no matter the weather. However, it hasn’t seemed to detract from the popularity of their original Esplanade location, which continues to draw crowds eager to sample the famous and lengthy beer list.

Betty’s

Locals try to keep the back patio a secret, which is no wonder given its relaxed vibe, choice of sunny or shady spots and plenty of seating. With 29 draught beers on tap there is something for everyone, be it craft beer, local flavours or unique picks from around the world.

Cold Tea

While Kensington’s worst-kept secret has gained a loyal following (it even has celebrity cred—the well-known and discriminating chef Anthony Bourdain has graced this hot spot with his presence) and a very decent (though moderate) beer selection, its backyard patio has retained its down-and-dirty Market feel.

Ronnie’s Local 069

While definitely more about the scene than the beer, if you’re looking for a patio that feels like a neighbourhood party, this is the perfect place to kick back with a pint. Beards and bikes rule at this joint.

The Only Café

With 24 draught offerings and one cask, this bar seems to be about only one thing—beer. With two patio options to choose from, sunbathers and shade seekers alike can work their way through the impressive brew selection in comfort.

The Rhino

This Parkdale institution touts two dozen beers on tap, cask ale and more than 300 bottles from around the globe. It’s no wonder they’ve been a neighbourhood favourite for over two decades.

The Victory Café

Tucked away on Markham Street, The Vic (as it’s known to locals) feels like the perfect neighbourhood bar. The tree-lined patio fills up quickly, so be prepared for a wait, taking advantage of the time to peruse the craft beer menu.

Of course, you can also go straight to the source and hit a local brewery. Bellwoods Brewery has a killer front patio, Mill Street Brewery has recently built up their outdoor footprint, Amsterdam’s outside spacewill be opening June 2013, and old favourites Steam Whistle and Granite Brewery do the al fresco thing well, too

Toronto Don Valley Hotel and Suites

Toronto Don Valley Hotel and Suites:

we upgraded to a newly renovated room for our 2 nights (extra 30$ a night)  The renovated rooms only means you get a kurig coffee maker, a different colour theme, new carpet and shower.....not a big deal.our door did'nt even really close unless you really pushed on it.

We spent our first day relaxing and not doing much....we went swimming...but this time it was dofferent....there was tons of rust seeping down from the skylight. I understand it's winter and there's condensation but there was ALOT. It wasclear this had been occuring for some time. The pool was kinda scuzzy.....like nobody ever cleaned the tiles around the inner edge and all the scum had affixed to the tile...certainley not like it was on our first visit...and it wasn't even as busy as our first visit.

The evening was  a never ending lullaby of the screen door above our room opening and closing all night and people spitting off the balcony......gross

As with most hotels there was a hanger for room service breakfast so  I filled it out and left it on our door and went to bed...IMAGINE MY SURPRISE when breakfast didn't show up......well you see...nobody bothered to collect the card off our door...then I was blamed by the bitchy woman for not putting it out in time when I had put it outside at 10pm......it says to place it there before 2 am... So needless to say I had to give my order to this total bitch in room service who told me to just give her the order as she was very busy. I ordered eggs benedict which was great...and for the boy, croissant french toast....which never arrived...what came instead was 3 tiny croissants that my son would;nt eat. I called downstairs and explained to a very nice man what happened and it all got fixed and my son's food arrived in about 10-15 mins...and he did enjoy it.

We spent the day at the science center.....while leaving our room it smelled grossly of cigarettes. My son has asthma and I am allergic to smoke so this is a reason I only stay in non smoking hotels....I mentioned it to the woman at front desk and her reply was "that's odd they have a balcony, I'll have someone go spray it"  yeah cause that solves the problem.....

it all just kept going wrong.... We did have an awesome fellow at front desk that saved me when the vending machine would not give my son his chocolate bar....he brought us 2 and our twonnie we lost..... sadly this was a highlight of our stay.

Upon returning from the science center exhausted I got to walk with my son down the endless hallway thru the cigarette smoke filled hallway that now also smelled like pot.....when I arrived in our room I called down to front desk....nobody did anything to help...again she informed me she would spray the hall....which most adults know does nothing as far as second hand smoke goes.... my husband was so pissed he told me to phone the cops about the pot....but since I was spending the nights alone with my son I didn't want to start an issue.  But at this point I was getting pissed. The fellow who handles their twitter account who had actually addressed the issues we had sent up some fruit and candy for me and my son.....which was nice but I would have been happier not popping benadryl into me and my son because of smoke allergies (it wasn't slightly stinky...it was the entire length of the hall and especially in front of a select few rooms)

dinner again was great!!!! it always is

After more swimming and my son falling asleep, my husband passed by for a bite to eat on his way to work. I ordered him the burger and cheesecake.... It arrived...wrong. the Burger was fine but the cheese cake was apple pie...the man who brought our food let me know that it was wrong and he would be back with the cheese cake. I wish he'd left the pie....cuz the cake tasted like the cardboard it was packaged in....it was sooooooo bad.....but at this point having 2 of 2 failed room service deliveries I just wanted to go to bed and go home the next day!

Between the smoke, and the staff not doing anything but spraying the hall (which if they did you sure couldn't tell) the 2 out of 2 room service fails, the pool, and the view it was a really really sad stay compared to our first stay. You see, I like to find a place and stay there....almost exclusively. I'm fiercely loyal and spread the word of good places. I told everyone I adored this place....but after our recent stay....well I'll kee
Was this review …?

Peter O'Sullivan dead at 64

Peter O'Sullivan dead at 64:

Peter "Sully" O'Sullivan has died at 64, found dead in his San Diego-area home last week.

The former editor-in-chief was many things to many people, but for most who worked with him, he was a tabloid genius whose Toronto Sun influence was felt off and on from the late 1970s to 1999.

Unfortunately, all that he gave to the Little Paper That Grew meant little to Quebecor. He was one of the first Sun executives to be axed when the long-lasting purge began in 1999.

Peter, says retired Sun Media executive Les Pyette, was hired by the late, great managing editor Ed Monteith.

"I am sorry to hear the news," says Pyette. "He was a natural newsman, an excellent tabloid editor. He could lay out a page better than most. Another old Sun soldier gone."

The Toronto Sun's 1980 John Lennon murder front page was all O'Sullivan. It was just one of many memorable fronts with his imprint on it as an unsung hero of the newsroom. He enjoyed pushing the envelop, perhaps wanting the Sun tabloid to be as tabloid as the Sun in his native England.

While Peter's Sun career began in the late 1970s and ended in 1999, those Sun years were not consecutive.

Peter spent time away from the tabloid, moving to the Houston Post as editor in December 1983 after it was purchased by Sun media. He was 39 and editor in chief of the Post when he resigned in September of 1988 to pursue other opportunities.

"The Post under Peter made dramatic improvements,'' an Associated Press story quoted William Dean Singleton, whose Houston-based Media News Group Inc. bought the Post in 1987, as saying.

At the same time,.Don Hunt (co-founder of the Toronto Sun) resigned as the Post's publisher to head a new international division of Media News.

In 1989, Peter was hired as managing editor of the St. Louis Sun, a new Missouri newspaper launched on Sept. 25, 1989, with an initial press run of 200,000. No doubt Peter sensed what Toronto Sun Day Oners experienced when the tabloid was launched on Nov. 1, 1971.

The new Sun tabloid, owned by Ingersoll Publications Co. in New Jersey, was competing for readership with the 110-year-old St. Louis Post Dispatch.

But the 1989 rising of a new Sun was short-lived. It folded seven months later, making its exit on April 25, 1990. But before it bid farewell, it was the talk of the town with the following headline: "He Bit Hers, She Sued His."

Knowing Peter O'Sullivan's work at the Toronto Sun, we are sure that headline was all Sully.

Peter made his way back to 333 King Street East in 1995 as editor in chief. After being axed in 1999, he made his way back to the United States, settling in Coronado, near San Diego.

We're not sure if he worked for newspapers in the San Diego area, but he had an ex-wife and step-children and step-grandchildren, says a Toronto Sun story.

If you want to share memories of Peter in the Toronto Sun Family blog, post them and we will launch a separate "Memories of" posting.

This blogger's memories include admiration for pushing the envelop in attempt to make the Toronto Sun a true tabloid.
